Do you suffer from dry eyes?

Dry eye clinic

Dry eyes occur when the eyes do not produce enough tears (20%) or when tears evaporate too quickly (80%). This can lead to a feeling of dryness, irritation, burning, tingling, and redness of the eyes.

Tear film

Tear film

The tear film is composed of three layers :

  • Lipid layer : The outer layer is produced by the Meibomian glands, located in the eyelids. This layer prevents rapid evaporation of tears.
  • Aqueous layer : The middle layer is produced by the main and accessory lacrimal glands. It constitutes the majority of tears and ensures adequate hydration of the ocular surface.
  • Mucin layer : The inner layer is produced by the goblet cells of the conjunctiva. It promotes the adherence of tears to the surface of the cornea.
Causes

Causes of rapid tear evaporation :

The main cause is dysfunction of the Meibomian glands located in the upper and lower eyelids.

It can be caused by various factors, including :

  • Gland blockage : Meibomian glands can become blocked due to excessive sebum production, altered sebum quality, or debris accumulation.
  • Inflammation : Inflammation of the Meibomian glands, called blepharitis, can impair their function.
  • Age : Aging can contribute to Meibomian gland dysfunction.
Treatment for dry eyes
  • Eye lubricants
  • Preservative-free artificial tears
  • Lubricating gels
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment

The IPL device emits pulses of intense light on the skin around the eye. This light penetrates the skin and targets inflammatory blood vessels.
By reducing inflammation, it allows the Meibomian glands to resume normal oil secretion to prevent tear evaporation.

Additionally, it treats rosacea, blepharitis, styes, chalazions, and Demodex, which are also responsible for dry eye syndrome.

Radiofrequency Treatment

Radiofrequency increases the temperature of the Meibomian glands. The heat delivered during the procedure melts the oil that obstructs the glands.
Additionally, the treatment reduces wrinkles and increases collagen, giving a more natural appearance to the skin.
