Presbyond

Turning forty comes with its share of minor problems, one of them being that it becomes harder and harder to read up close. That is what we call presbyopia. Unfortunately, reading glasses often become necessary. There is now a method of correcting this problem using the MEL 90 laser: a method called Laser Blended Vision (LBV). It uses the principle of monovision, in a better and more efficient way.

What is Presbyond (Laser Blended Vision) ?

The first technique used to correct presbyopia with laser was monovision. This technique involves correcting the dominant eye for distance vision and the non-dominant eye for near vision. The acceptance rate for monovision ranges between 50 and 60%.

Normally, when looking at an image, the image seen by the right eye overlaps with that of the left eye to create a clear image in the brain. In the case of monovision, the brain must therefore eliminate the blurry image to retain only the clear image. For some, this exercise is easy and natural, but for others, it is impossible.

Laser Blended Vision uses the principle of monovision with the addition of depth of field correction. This technique improves intermediate vision.

  • The dominant eye for distance vision: sees well at a distance and better in intermediate vision.
  • The non-dominant eye for near vision: sees well up close and better in intermediate vision.

Improving the depth of field of both eyes allows the two images, distant and near, to be similar. The more they resemble each other, the easier they are to fuse. Thus, distant, intermediate, and near vision are clearer. Presbyond therefore increases the acceptance rate to 97%.
To perform this technique, either Femto-LASIK or KPR is required.

Advantages
  • Freedom from wearing glasses and/or contact lenses.
  • Increased acceptance rate to 97% compared to monovision (50-60%).
  • No loss of stereopsis.
  • This is a reversible correction, in case you belong to the 3% of people who do not adapt to surgery.
Who can benefit from Presbyond ?

This technique is suitable for individuals with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism who have difficulty reading up close (presbyopia), as well as those with clear distance vision without correction.
